Pets

Did you know doTERRA oils can be safely used with your pets? There are some safety considerations and oils that when it comes to topical use you will want to avoid (see below). Follow these tips to safely use your doterra oils around your pets.

SAFETY AND USE TIPS

Always dilute when you apply oils on an animal. You will notice these are heavily diluted ratios as animals are much smaller and do not require much.

Dogs sense of smell is 50-100 times greater than ours!

Cats are missing a liver enzyme (glucuranyl tranferase). This makes the liver slower at eliminating certain compounds which can lead to build up. Phenols (hot oils) should be used with caution.

Do not put oils directly into the ears, eyes, nose, or any other sensitive areas.

Ways to Use with Pets

Here is a list of oils that may not be safe to use around your pets:

  • Anise
  • Camphor
  • Cinnamon
  • Clove
  • Juniper Berry
  • Tea tree (Especially avoid using tea tree around cats!)
  • Oregano
  • Wintergreen
  • Ylang ylang
  • Eucalyptus

Never apply essential oils in or near the eyes, ears, nose, or genital area.

AROMATIC
Diffuse- Apply to your hand and hold up to the nose (DO NOT PUT ON NOSE) Apply to bandana, collar, bed, or toys (1-3 drops). You can also safely diffuse in your home as well- the rule of thumb is do not lock your pet in the room with the diffuser when they don’t like the smell- allow them to leave the room (similar to a human), animals usually will let you know they are not a fan.

TOPICAL
Always dilute before applying with fractionated coconut oil
Nape of the neck
Paws (between toes or pads)
Directly on affected area
Spine
Pinna (hairless portion of inside of ear flap)

INTERNALLY
In water bowl
On food- In capsule
Directly on the gums (diluted)
