My baby fully enjoyed her Winter ONEderland this January. Time surely does fly. I have loved every second of being a momma and love nothing more than making my sweet baby REAL WHOLE foods. Since 6 months old when she began to eat solids everything was homemade organic baby purees and meals. We focus on priming that immune system, staying hydrated and eating all our greens! I breast fed until Ava was 9 1/2 months old to set the tone and build a nice foundation for her gut flora and microbiome!
When making her first cake, I felt more comfortable with the fact that this was her first time eating “processed” SUGAR. Knowing her first birthday cake had all the “good for her” ingredients was the prefect indulgence for her special day. I decided to make this a tradition. Never will I ever by a store bought birthday cake again. Mom RULES!
After all, deprivation is the not the answer and as a Health Coach I preach moderation all day long. Its okay to indulge in your favorite things every now and then as long as there not a consistent part of your diet.
I sweetened her cake with a tiny amount of maple syrup and apple sauce. As for the icing:
- organic powder sugar
- organic applesauce
- my favorite Miyokos plant based butter
The ingredients in this plant based butter is the only REAL one Ive found yet, and its organic! Organic Coconut Oil, Filtered Water, Organic Sunflower Oil, Organic Cashews, Organic Sunflower Lecithin, Sea Salt, Cultures.
As for the cake pans I used these cute little cocottes cast iron pots. They are like a casserole pans or dutch oven for individual portions. They were perfect!

Healthy 1 Year Old Birthday Cake
- 2 Cocottes
- Hand held mixer/Kitchen Aid
- 1 cup oat flour
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- 1/8 tsp salt
- 1 organic banana
- 1/4 cup hemp milk
- 2 tbsp maple syrup
- 1/3 cup organic applesauce
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 tbsp plant based butter I use Miyokos
- 1 tsp organic apple sauce
- 1/3 cup organic powdered sugar
- Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.
- Rub coconut oil in your cocotte pans. (I used cast iron cocottes).
- Whisk together all the dry ingredients in a medium bowl and set aside.
- In a separate bowl add all the wet ingredients (for the cake) and blend using a handheld mixer or Kitchen Aid mixer.
- Combine the dry ingredients with the wet ingredients and mix until combined.
- Divide the batter up into the 2 pans and bake in the oven for about 20-25 minutes. Let cool before removing from pan.
- For the frosting, add all the ingredients to a bowl and blend until smooth.
